Jean A. Mercil, 91, Detroit Lakes, passed away Monday, April 13, 2015 surrounded by her loving family at Ecumen- Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 17 at 1:30PM in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior. Jean Agnes Barry was born February 24, 1924 in Brainerd, MN to Charles and Ann (Bowers) Barry. She graduated from high school in Bemidji, MN. After high school Jean entered the nursing program in Grand Forks, ND. Following WWII, Jean was a cadet nurse in Denver, CO for a few years and later moved back to Minnesota. Jean was united in marriage to Jerome J. Mercil in Bemidji on October 26, 1949. They lived in a number of communities throughout Minnesota where Jean worked as a registered nurse. She retired from the nursing field when she was 62 years old. In 2003, Jean and Jerome relocated to Detroit Lakes. Jean worked part-time at the Becker County Museum and enjoyed learning about the community through her work. She also enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles. While living at Union Central, Jean enjoyed socializing with her friends and especially visits and time spent with her daughters. Holidays, family gatherings and her Faith were an important part of Jean's life. She will be remembered and missed by her 4 daughters: Nancy (Lou) Guzek of Detroit Lakes, Janet (David) Gilbertson of Palisade, MN, Diane (David) Kucera of Bemidji, Julie (Will) Owens of Cohasset, MN along with 10 grandchildren: Christopher, Katie, Kristina, Matthew, A.J., Nora, Andy, Jeramy, Alex and Kelly and three great-grandchildren: Kade, Liam and Lucas.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents and husband Jerome (2012).
