Jerry Wayne Green was born April 9, 1947 in Hawley, Minnesota, the son of Theodore and Jona (Jacobson) Green. He passed away Monday November 14, 2022 at Pelican Landing in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Growing up he attended school in Hitterdal and Waubun. He worked on the family farm and served in the Minnesota National Guard.
On December 31, 1965, Jerry was united in marriage to Marlene Herby at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Waubun. They had two children and made their home in Hawley, then Glyndon. Jerry worked as a brick layer and became a mason contractor. He started World Stone of Glyndon then Green Masonry. His work crews were like family to him and their biggest job was completing the masonry work on the Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks.
Jerry was an active member of the Glyndon community. He served as fire chief in Glyndon for 20 years, and was a founding member of the Glyndon Jaycees. He was active with the Rod and Gun Club, Pheasants Forever, and the Buffalo Chips Snowmobile Club. He enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada and pheasant hunting adventures where numerous stories of shenanigans occurred.
In 2001, Jerry and Marlene built their dream home on big Cormorant Lake where they hosted the annual Green family 4th of July celebration. He was known for his baked beans, boating adventures and making people laugh.
Throughout his adult life, Jerry swapped jokes and stories at the morning coffee group in Glyndon, Lake Park and Detroit Lakes. Of course he also had a love-hate relationship with the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. Jerry will be remembered for his hard work, creativity, his love for his grandchildren, and his sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife Marlene Green of Detroit Lakes; children: Jesse Green of Glyndon; Jackie (John) Haugo of Mahnomen; grandchildren: Trevor Haugo (fiance Maddie) of Waubun; Justine (Levi) Liebl of Gary; siblings: Judy (Virgil) Spaeth of Henning; Karen (Mike) Brakefield Detroit Lakes; David (Cheryl) Green of Waubun; Doreen (Dave) Meyer of Moorhead.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Ted and Jona Green, brother-in-law Mike Brakefield.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Jerry's honor to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
