Joan Cox, age 76, of rural Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Friday, July 10, 2015. Funeral service will be held 11a.m., Friday, July 17, 2015, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Battle Lake, MN. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, July 15, 2015, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Ashby, MN. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Joan Evelyn Cox was born August 7, 1938, in Fergus Falls, MN, to Torkel and Olive (Juvland) Knutson. She grew up in Ashby where she attended District #2 country school. She graduated from Ashby High School with the class of 1956 and worked at Norway Beach on Staker Lake. Later she went on to attend Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Joan met Thomas Cox in Moorhead. The couple was marred in 1961. They had two sons: William and Charles. The family lived in Moorhead, where Joan gained employment at the Fargo Clinic. She served as a receptionist there for 18 years. In 1982, Joan met Duane Barnard. The couple made their home on Little Pelican Lake in 1988. Joan worked at the Cormorant Pub for a short time where she made many friends. Joan and Duane continued to enjoy many afternoons at the Cormorant Pub where they enjoyed the great food and company. Joan had many hobbies; puzzles, Sudoku, and mahjong tiles to name just a few. She enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Battle Lake. Joan is survived by two sons: William (Susan) Cox of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Charles Cox of Dilworth, MN, two grandchildren: Michael Cox of Plymouth, MA and great grandson, Gunnar; Katie (Brian) Jenkins of Ft. Collins, CO and great grandchildren: Harper and Easton; two step-grandchildren: Sydney and Grant Barron; Joan's life partner, Duane Barnard of rural Detroit Lakes; Duane's son, Kyle (Dorothy) Barnard of West Fargo; their children: Bradley and his children: Brittany, Caitlin, Donovan and Marissa, Brett (Micki) Barnard, Sara Barnard and Charlie Barnard; one sister, Christine Maxson of Wayzata, MN; one brother-in-law, Phillip Kaste of Sisseton, SD; along with many nieces and nephews. Preceding Joan in death were her parents; husband, Thomas Cox; sister, Thelma Kaste; and brother-in-law, John Maxson.
