JoAnn Gustafson

JoAnn Gustafson, 80, resident of rural Ogema, MN, died Sunday, February 26, 2012 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes, MN. Services for JoAnn will be held Friday, March 2, 2012 at 2:00 PM in Lund Lutheran Church, rural Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Interment will be held in the spring at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Wheaton, MN. The David-Donehower Funeral Home is serving the family JoAnn Gjerde was born in Leonard, ND on September 27, 1931 to Simon and Borgny (Garnes) Gjerde. As a young girl, JoAnn moved to Wolverton, MN. She lived her younger years with the Johnson family (Minnie and Lilly) as her mother was in poor health. She attended school at church at Deerhorn, ND. They later moved to the Strawberry Lake area. After JoAnn finished school she moved to Wheaton, MN. On July 10, 1949, JoAnn was united in marriage to Donald Gustafson. While living in Wheaton JoAnn was a member of the Bethlehem Covenant Church, where she was active teaching Sunday school along with Bible school in the summer months. She was also a Hi-League leader, 4-H Leader and worked at the hospital as a cook. JoAnn retired in 1990 and she and Don moved back to the Strawberry Lake Area. JoAnn was a member at Lund Lutheran Church where she stayed active with Bible Study. She was the Sunshine Lady member of the Senior Citizens of White Earth, belonged to the Mennonite Sewing Circle, and was a Card Club member and a volunteer for RSVP. JoAnn also was an Avon Representative for over 40 years. JoAnn crocheted fancy work for the Amish shop in Erhard. She loved to do embroidery work and she baked the best pies. She loved keeping in touch with her sister Irene in Washington and for many years they wrote letters to one another on a daily basis. JoAnn loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and always looked forward to their next visit. JoAnn will be remembered and deeply missed by her husband of 62 years; Don of rural Ogema, MN, her children: Beatrice Chounard of Detroit Lakes, Kathleen (Steve) Terhaar of Plymouth, MN, Carol (Richard) Feist of Jordan, MN, Rick (Holly) Gustafson of East Bethel, MN, Dona (Greg) Greiner of Donnelly, MN and Teresa Gustafson of Wheaton, MN. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, two sisters: Irene McDowell of Renton, WA and Lorna Schons of rural Ogema, MN. and one sister-in-law, Kay (Steve) Noll. She is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: James, Willard, Robert and Richard and one sister: Sylvia Ringstad.
