JoAnne Mortenson

JoAnne P. Mortenson, 67, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Monday, October 17 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, October 22 at Strawberry Lake Mennonite Church in rural Ogema. Interment will be in the Strawberry Lake Mennonite Cemetery. Friends may call 5:00 – 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM Friday at David-Donehower Funeral Home and at the church 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday. JoAnne Phyllis Mortenson was born August 17, 1944 in Bagley, MN to Jack and Marie (Dodd) Manning. As a child she moved with her family to Strawberry Lake in rural Ogema where she attended country school. She later attended Detroit Lakes public school and is a graduate of the Chef Training Program at the Detroit Lakes AVTI. JoAnne was united in marriage to Allan "Buck" Mortenson, August 3, 1962 in Detroit Lakes. They lived in a number of communities while Buck served for 20 years with the U. S. Navy. They divorced in 1983. She returned to Detroit Lakes where she met William "Slug" Markwardt with whom she spent the next 25 years. During her working life, JoAnne worked at Swift and Company in Detroit Lakes and West Central Turkey Processing in Pelican Rapids. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, flowers, cooking, visiting, watching TV Evangelists, Old Time Music and feeding the birds. Survivors include four children: Debbie (Mark) Kiser of Detroit Lakes, Tony Mortenson of Detroit Lakes, Lana (Joel) Davidson of Nenana, Alaska, Allan (Joann) Mortenson of Nenana, Alaska, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four sisters: Darlene (Warren) Stoll of Detroit Lakes, Donna Thompson of Ogema, MN, Beverly Stoll of Detroit Lakes, Kathy (Roy) Mortenson of Hitterdal, MN and a brother: Mel (Shirley) Manning of Detroit Lakes. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother: John, her long time companion, Slug and brothers-in-law: Ron Stoll, Roger Tessman, Doug Peppen and Don Thompson.
