Joseph "Joe" Wayne Bennett, 76, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away November 15th, 2014 at his home surrounded by family after a 3 year battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 20 at the David-Donehower Funeral home in Detroit Lakes with visitation from 12:00pm until the time of service. Joe was born on July 3rd, 1938 in Bismarck, North Dakota to William and Joyce (Barney) Bennett and later attended several different schools growing up, ending up in Fargo, ND. He entered the US Army in 1961 and was a military police officer spending the majority of his time as a prison guard at Fort Leavenworth, KS. He was honorably discharged and went to work as a police officer in Rugby, ND. He then became the chief of police in Mayville, ND. He also worked as a police officer for the City of Ogema, MN. He was a loving husband to Barbara Schwarz Bennett whom he was united in marriage to on December 24, 1970, at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. In the later years he needed a change of scenery and began his career in the construction field. Joe worked all over the upper Midwest, building commercial buildings and apartments complexes. He retired and worked as an armed guard for Currency Exchange for several years. He had a knack for fixing about anything, he worked as a custodian at the Becker County Museum and worked several "handyman" jobs throughout the Detroit Lakes area. He was a lifelong snowmobiler and loved to fish and hunt just about anything. Deer hunting was a national holiday in his book. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his children from a previous marriage, Joel Bennett, Gresham, OR, Todd Bennett and Rochelle (Kevin) Berlin both of Fargo and daughter Jill Iverson of Boise ID. He is also survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara, of Detroit Lakes; children, William (Robyn) Bennett of Nevis, MN, Kirk Bennett, Bonney Lake, WA; sisters, Lois (Ron) Barron Antioch IL., Joan Elsbery, LaGrande OR; and seven grandchildren, Amanda, Malarie, Taylor, Hunter, Reed, Lindsey and Devin. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Sheets; and sisters, Phyllis Holt and Judith Emery.
