John E. Ista, 85, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Saturday, November 20 at St. Mary's – Essentia Health in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 27 at Augustana Lutheran Church in rural Detroit Lakes, Reverend Paul Peterson, officiating.
Friends may call 4:00 – 8:00 PM Friday with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. John Edward Ista was born January 31, 1925 in Walcott, ND to LeRoy and Maud (Hancock) Ista. He is a 1943 graduate of Colfax (ND) High School, and then farmed near Colfax 1955 – 1962. John was united in marriage to Lorraine Johnson August 10, 1955 in Leonard, ND. He attended North Dakota State University in Fargo 1962 – 1965. He was then employed with Simplex Time Recorder Company for the next 26 years, retiring in 1991. John was a voracious reader, took delight in his grandchildren's accomplishments, enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, waterskiing until he was 84 years old, dancing and tinkering. He was affectionately known to his neighbors as the "King of the Beach. He was always there to help a neighbor on any project with helping hands and advice. His knowledge and help will be missed by all. One of John's nieces shared this: "John could walk into a room and people would grin, he was that charismatic…John loved people, too". He was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church Board, served as past president and enjoyed teaching the Bethel Bible Series. He was also a past member of the Elks and Eagles. Survivors include his wife: Lorraine of Detroit Lakes; daughters: Barbara (Randy) Schuetz of Lake Norman, NC and Gayle (Joe) Hyde of Fargo, ND; four grandchildren: Ryan (Laura) Schuetz, Blaine Schuetz Nora Hyde and Maddie Hyde; two sisters: Marjorie Crowell of Napa, CA and Lorraine Kurth of Hendricks, MN; a brother: Adolph Ista of W. Fargo, ND. He was preceded in death by brothers: LeRoy and Allen and a sister: Beverly Trimble.
