John Jacoby

John C. Jacoby, age 93, of Detroit lakes, MN, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Essentia-Oak Crossing Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. A funeral mass will be at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. A visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, March 7, at David Donehower Funeral Home, with a rosary service by the Knight of Columbus at 6:30 pm and a prayer service at 7:00 pm. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the mass at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be held later in the spring. John was born on October 27, 1922, to John and Bessie (Jewell) Jacoby in Detroit Lakes, MN. He attended school and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1940. He went on to graduate from the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis in 1941. John served his country in the Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1946. He was united in marriage to Catherine McCarthy in December of 1944. After his honorable discharge he returned to Detroit Lakes where he worked for Gamble-Robinson Wholesale in Fargo, Blanding's Department Store and then Western Auto Hardware Store in Detroit Lakes. In 1954 he became the Becker County Treasurer and served for 32 years until his retirement in 1986. He also served as the Becker County Civil Defense Director for several years. On August 12, 1956, He was united in marriage to Roma Kee at St. Mary of The Lakes Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. John was an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and his community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He served on several community advisory boards including: Mahube Community Action Partnership, the Community Education Board, and as a founding member and past president for the Becker County Food Pantry. John volunteered for Meals on Wheels delivering meals to area seniors. In 1997 he was named Senior Citizen of the Year for Becker County. John enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, and gardening. He loved to mow the yard on his riding mower at "break-neck speeds". Every year he would host and look forward to the Jacoby family picnic, where he enjoyed time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Roma; two daughters, Jennifer (Douglas) Isackson of Stillwater, and Janine (Jack) Vogt of Detroit Lakes; grandchildren: Douglas and David Isackson, and Cory and John Vogt; great grandchildren: Wyatt, Alyssa, Kendal, and Rufina Isackson, Kelsey Montoya, and Chantel and Taylor Vogt; and a great-great granddaughter, Savannah Montoya. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Bessie; his first wife, Catherine; siblings, Margaret Jacoby, Frank Jacoby, Katherine Keyes, Donald Jacoby, and Marion Teague. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Becker County Food Pantry or charity of choice.
