John J. Muhlenkort, 43, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Sunday, March 4, 2012 at St. Mary's- Essentia Health, Detroit Lakes.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 9, 2012 at 2:00 PM in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to services on Friday. Interment will be held at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Waubun, MN. John was born December 28, 1968 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Oliver and Virginia (Hawn) Muhlenkort. He was raised and educated in Waubun, MN, graduating from Waubun High School in 1987. After school he enrolled at Detroit Lakes Technical College where he studied small engine repair. From 1988-1996, John was employed by Jack's Motorsports in Mahnomen, MN. He later went to work at K-Mart in Detroit Lakes where he was the manager of the Garden Center from 1998-2002. For a short time, John worked at Lakeshirts until health issues forced him into early retirement. On July 6, 2002, John was united in marriage to Carrie Borah at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. They made their home in Detroit Lakes and devoted their life to raising their two beautiful daughters, Ashley and Nicole. John loved to go hunting, muskie fishing, ice fishing and most recently John got back into trapping. He loved dogs and enjoyed his two beagles: Copper and Tinkerbell. John always kept busy, if he wasn't outside working on a project or spending time with his daughters, John was tending to his "honey-do" list for Carrie or helping his friend Tony at his shop. John will be remembered and deeply missed by his wife Carrie of Detroit Lakes, daughters: Ashley and Nicole of Detroit Lakes, brothers: Donald Muhlenkort of Waubun, MN, Mark Muhlenkort of Chaska, MN, sisters: Mary Ann (Gene) Broberg of Oklahoma City, OK, June (Rollie) Olson of Sartell, MN, Elizabeth (Brian) Zurn of Detroit Lakes and Karen (Jesse) McCollum of Ulen, MN, his mother and father–in -law: Floyd and Cyndi Borah of Detroit Lakes, brothers-in-law: Corey Borah of Mulberry, FL, Casey Borah of Fargo, ND, Cody Borah of Detroit Lakes and sister-in-law: Jennifer Freeman of Austin, TX along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents Oliver and Virginia.
