John Emil Ostlund was born July 25, 1953 to Clyde and Corrine (Myhre) Ostlund in Wadena, MN. In 1957, they moved to Detroit Lakes, MN where John attended grade school, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School. He furthered his education at the University of Minnesota – Morris for two years before moving back to the lakes area. For 30 years, John worked for the Becker County Sheriff’s Department as a jailer/dispatcher and later a Deputy Sherriff. John retired in the summer of 2003. During his career he served as a Union Steward for the Teamster’s Union and was an active member of the Patriot Guard, where he was able to ride his Goldwing and bear the American Flag. John loved the outdoors, going hunting and fishing whenever possible and heading up to deer camp in Zerkel, MN during the fall. He enjoyed small scale model building, especially WWII memorabilia, and listening to historians share stories of WWII. He was active in his community where he did youth firearms and snowmobile training. With his love for snowmobiling, John and his friends started the “Ultra Snowmobile Club” which today still helps in the grooming and maintenance of the trails in Becker County.
John will be remembered and deeply missed by his son; Anthony Ostlund of Minneapolis, MN, his father; Clyde Ostlund of Detroit Lakes, MN, two brothers: David (January) Ostlund of Surprise, AZ and Thomas (Sharon) Ostlund of Papillion, NE.
