John H. "Jack" Reed, 93, resident of Pelican Lake near Pelican Rapids, MN and Pompano Beach, FL died Monday, October 24, 2011 at Eventide Nursing Home in Moorhead, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial for Jack will be held Friday, October 28 at 1:00 PM in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services on Friday. Interment will be held in Lakeside Cemetery, Frazee, MN.
Jack was born April 28, 1918 in Garwin, Iowa to Fred and Mae (Gettis) Reed. With his parents, Jack moved to various communities in southern Minnesota before settling in Frazee in 1938. On October 21, 1941, he entered into the United States Army and was sent overseas. He proudly served his country during WWII and was involved in several campaigns throughout Europe. He was honorably discharged June 24, 1945 at Fort Snelling, MN. On June 6, 1947, Jack was united in marriage to Margaret Rasmussen in Sauk Centre, MN. They moved to St. Paul where Jack started his career working at Minneapolis – Moline as an assembler. He later took a job working at General Mills in St. Paul as a millwright before accepting a position with Century Motor Freight where he worked for the next 21 years. Jack retired in 1978. Jack and Margaret purchased a retirement home in Pompano Beach, FL and for 33 years, enjoyed spending 6 months in Florida and 6 months on Pelican Lake. In his spare time Jack enjoyed shooting a round of golf with friends. At the age of 90, Jack scored two holes- in- ones on the same golf course in Pompano Beach, each with the same golf ball. He also enjoyed fishing, water skiing, dancing with Margaret, playing cards with family and friends, going on cruises, and traveling around the country. Jack will be remembered and missed by his wife of 64 years; Margaret of Moorhead, MN, two brothers: Joe (Diane) Reed of Pierre, SD and Frank (Vivian) Reed of Savage, MT. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
