Joseph Mackner

Joseph “Joe” Merten Mackner, age 41, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2017, from injuries sustained in a train accident.  A funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, August 11, 2017, at David Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with a time of gathering at 1:00 pm.

Joe was born on February 4, 1976, to Dennis and Mary (Seward) Mackner in Detroit Lakes.  He grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes and went on to work for his families bait business. He was an avid cook who also worked as a chef for numerous area restaurants.  In addition, he worked in a wrecking yard as a car crusher.

Joe loved spending his time outdoors and enjoyed fishing, deer and duck hunting, and mushroom hunting.  He was also an avid bowler, who played for his league team.  Joe also liked spending time working on cars and cooking in the kitchen.  Above all, his life was focused on his son, Kayne.  He loved his time with his son and was a wonderful caring father.

He is survived by his son, Kayne; his mother, Mary (Kevin) Boit of Detroit Lakes; brothers: Terry Mackner of Fargo, Scott (Crystal) Mackner of Detroit Lakes, Nic Boit of Detroit Lakes, Shawn Boit of Detroit Lakes, Jeff (Jody) Mackner of Spring Lake Park, MN; and Chris Mackner of Elk River, MN; a grandfather, Allen Knopf of Rochert, MN; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Dennis Mackner; a sister, Paula Mackner; grandparents, Merten and Selma Mackner, and Viola and Francis Seward; and several aunts and uncles.
