Joseph George Neitzke, age 90, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes. A funeral mass will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, July 14, 2016, at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with a time of gathering at noon. A visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at the church, with a prayer service at 7:00 pm.
Joe was born on November 10, 1925, to Robert and Katherine (Riewer) Neitzke, in Detroit Lakes, MN. He attended school in Detroit Lakes where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He graduated high school in 1944. Upon graduation he joined the Marine Corps; while in the service he attended Villanova College for officer training. When the war ended, he used his G.I. Bill to attend Northern Illinois College of Optometry, where he graduated in 1950. That year he returned to Detroit Lakes to open his optometry practice. On June 9, 1952, he married Norma Jean Courneya at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes and to that union five children were born. He retired in 1990. He was a life-long member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church; where he served for 65 years with the Knight's of Columbus. He was devoted to his faith and family. He volunteered his time as a Boy Scout leader. Similarly, he gave his professional services to the Gun Safety Program and on two missionary trips to Guyana and Uganda. He was an avid fan of his children's sports and activities. Joe loved hunting, fishing, horse-back riding, and was a talented handyman. He remained active up to his death and enjoyed working out at the D.L.C.C.C. He is survived by his children, Gregory (Cindy) of Eden Prairie, Debra Gustafson of Arden Hills, Michael of Foster City, CA, Steve (Sandra) of Detroit Lakes, Barb (Scott) Johnson of Detroit Lakes; grandchildren, Nathaniel Neitzke of Fargo, ND, Samuel (Samantha) Neitzke of Fargo, ND, and Mathew Gustafson of Arden Hills; a brother, and Alfred Neitzke of Wadena. He is preceded in death by his wife, Norma; a miscarried child; his parents, Robert and Katherine; four brothers, Pete, Chuck, Bill, and Raymond; and a sister, Dorothy
