Joseph R. Werlinger, 97, Detroit Lakes, Mn, died Wednesday at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 PM Wednesday, November 3 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Msgr. Timothy McGee, officiating. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Friends may call 5:00 – 7:00 PM Tuesday with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 and Parish Prayers at 7:00 PM at Holy Rosary Church. The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the mass at the church on Wednesday.
Joseph Raphael Werlinger was born February 12, 1913 in Aberdeen, SD to Joseph T. and Helen (Wenz) Werlinger. He was raised and educated in Aberdeen and is a graduate of Aberdeen High School. He then attended Northern State College in Aberdeen for two years. Joe began working for the Nash Finch Company in 1936 and later worked for the Russell Miller Milling Company in Aberdeen. Joe was united in marriage to Ellen Traver October 7, 1940 in Aberdeen, SD. He was transferred to Cedar Rapids, IA in 1940 and to Chippewa Falls, WI in 1942 where he served as Branch Manager. They moved to Detroit Lakes, MN in 1950 where Joe worked as a salesman for Nick and Sons Casket Company of Tomahawk, WI until his retirement in 1978. Ellen died in 1967.
Joe was united in marriage to Florence Metzler Ferrin in 1968 in Detroit Lakes. Joe was a member of the Elks, the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was an avid golfer and was proud of the Hole-In-One the he got on October 29, 1992.
Survivors include two daughters: Susan (Tom) Varley of Redmound, OR and Kathleen Johnson of Peru, NY; Six Step-children: Thomas (Pat) Ferriin of Los Angeles, CA, John “Denny” (Darlene) Ferrin of Medfirn, OR, Kathy Peichel of Hutchinson, MN, Mary (Joe Paul) Priggal of Portageville, MO, Lynn (Linda) Ferrin of Cottage Grove, OR and David (Linda) Ferrin of Duluth, MN, Six grandchildren: Joseph, Angela, Linnea, Charlie, Maggie and Jennifer and 12 great grandchildren. In addition to his wives, Ellen and Florence, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law: John E. Johnson, One sister and One brother.
