Joyce Marie (Flynn) Matter was born September 29, 1931 in White Earth, MN to James and Ethel (Bellefeuille) Flynn. As a young girl she lived with her family in rural Vergas and Callaway, MN , moving twice to Fresno, CA, until settling in Callaway in 1941. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1949. Following graduation she became a legal secretary working in Moorhead, MN. Joyce was united in marriage to Ralph Matter on February 14, 1952 in Callaway. They farmed and raised their family in Audubon Township, rural Audubon. They moved to Lake Ida in Cormorant Township in 1981 and to Detroit Lakes in 2000. Joyce entered Essentia-St. Mary's Nursing Home in May, 2007. Ralph died in 2008. Joyce was an active member of Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Lake Park and Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. She enjoyed playing softball and league bowling and was a member of the Au-Ha Homemakers Club, Country Twirlers Square Dance Club and First Ladies Investment Club. She was known for her collection of teapots, green thumb, delicious cinnamon rolls and sugar cookies, and as a wonderful hostess. She had a special love for children. especially babies. Upon entering the nursing home, she became a resident volunteer and loved helping whenever she was able. Survivors include her children: Kathleen (Allen) Klindt of Audubon, Russell (Joyce) of Moorhead, Jacqueline (LeRoy) Vandermay of Wadena, Regine (Kevin) Hutchinson of Fargo, Diane (Jerry) Yonga of St. Paul, Ralph Jr. (Mary) of Thief River Falls, Richard (Kelly) of Coon Rapids, MN, Roland (Shannon) of Burnsville, MN, Joyce (Jon C.) Stone of Detroit Lakes, 27 grandchildren, 26, soon to be 27 great grandchildren, brothers: Wayne Flynn of Minneapolis, Dean Flynn of Monticello, MN, Thomas (Virginia "Ginger") Flynn of Detroit Lakes, a sister: Patricia (Robert) Krebsbach of Tower, MN. In addition to her husband, Ralph, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Patricia, her parents and a brother, James Flynn.
