Detroit Lakes

Judith “Judy” (Togstad) Bashford Omundson passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at the age of 79 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Judy was born to Odin and Rita (Bertram) Togstad on March 8, 1945, in Gary, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Nancy, husbands: Allan L. Bashford, who passed away in 1971 and David A.O. Omundson, who passed away in 1994; her special companion Andy “Art” Hagen; her great-nephew Wyatt Hatcher in 2021; and her nephew, Rory (Georgie) Pruett in 2024.

Judy is survived by her sisters: Rosie (Daryl) Larson and Jeanne (Bill-deceased) Gilge and Jeanne’s dear friend Allan; children: Michael Bashford, Marty Bashford, John (Desiree) Bashford, Anne Omundson, Juliette Omundson; grandchildren: Madilynn Winne, Joey (Kayla) Davis, Cohl (Chastine) Aschoff, Jurnee (Gary) Bashford-Garza, Constance (Tillen) Bashford, Blaize Freeman, Christian Freeman, and Poppi Omundson; and 7 great grandchildren: Paisley, Bentley, Maverick, Serenity, Raven, Jax, and Parker. She is also survived by Nieces: Tammy Jacobson and Laurie Hatcher, and Nephews: Daryl “DJ” (Hong) Larson and Troy (Tina) Pruett.

Judy went to school in Detroit Lakes, MN with the class of 1963. Although she was not able to graduate with her class, she did earn her G.E.D. later and was known for her mathematical prowess and incredible range of eclectic knowledge and amazing memory. Judy wrote the “Frazee News” social column for the Frazee Forum and cooked for both the Becker County Jail and the Emmanuel Nursing Home. Later, Judy was known to many for delivering newspapers throughout the lakes area and never failed to keep a box of Blow Pops with her just in case she ran into any kids along her route.

Anyone who was blessed to know Judy would agree that she had a high level of competitiveness when it came to playing her favorite games: Scrabble, Cribbage, Whist, Pinochle, Hearts, and almost any card game. Her charm and sassiness made it even more fun and memorable to play games with her family and friends. She enjoyed many things in life: Bertram Family reunions, rummage sales, canning, cooking, the color purple; hummingbirds; plants/flowers, which were found throughout her homes; spending time with family; journaling; Jeopardy; and most of all, swimming – especially at her beloved lake home on Lake 6. She spent many years making countless memories on Lake Six with her children, grandchildren, and extended family. The lake was the one place you could count on finding her almost any day of the week.

Judy’s Christianity, charity, kindness, generosity, sense of humor, spunkiness, and all-around greatness has forever left a mark on this world and the many people who knew and loved her, and neither these traits nor Judy will ever be forgotten.

The family would like to thank the staff at Essentia Oak Crossing and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their wonderful compassion and care provided for Judy on her end-of-life journey. Per Judy’s request and last wishes, she will be cremated with a private, family ceremony to occur later. She meant a great deal to numerous people who had the pleasure of knowing her beautiful spirit and will be severely missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks contributions to be made to assist in covering her final expenses to David Donehower Funeral Home.  Please click the link below to make a contribution:
