Julius Schmit

Julius Benedict Schmit, age 92, of Detroit Lakes, died on January 8, 2015 at his home under the care of his loving family and the Hospice of The Red River Valley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 14 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. The visitation is from 4:00-7:00pm on Tuesday, January 13 at David-Donehower Funeral with the rosary at 6:30pm and prayer service at 7:00 pm. Julius was born June 13, 1922 in Ogema, Minnesota to Michael and Margaretha (Funk) Schmit. He attended school in Waubun, MN and graduated in 1937. Julius and Phyllis (Brogren) were united in marriage on June 28, 1954 in Detroit Lakes. He was a mechanic at Teiken's Moble in Ogema from 1946-1973. After retiring he opened his own garage, Schmit Auto Repair, with his son Don. Julius was a faithful member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and served as the recorder for 32 years. He also was on the 3rd degree initiation team. Julius was known for his stories and his hearty handshake. He was kind hearted and will be deeply missed by everyone that knew him. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis; children, Cheryl (Joe Ed) Knopf of Detroit Lakes, Karen of Detroit Lakes, Linda (John) Schouviller of Callaway, Don of Detroit Lakes, Lori of Detroit Lakes, Lois (Mike) Schouviller of Callaway, Brian (Stephanie) of Panama City, Florida; 16 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Margaretha; a brother, John; a sister, Mary Schons; and an infant daughter, Diane.
