June Joy

June Mildred (Shermerhorn) Joy, 84, of Detroit Lakes, MN passed away on July 9, 2019 at Essentia-Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes with her family by her side.

A visitation will be held Friday, July 12 from 5-7pm with a Prayer Service at 6:30pm at the David-Donehower Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 13 at 11am at the United Methodist Church, Detroit Lakes with a visitation one hour prior.

June was born on June 13, 1935 in Callaway, MN to Julius Schermerhorn and Hannah Upke, on the family farm where she was raised along with her ten siblings. On January 17, 1953, June married her high school sweetheart, Ronald in Cloquet, MN. They started their life and family in Detroit Lakes, MN. They moved to River Falls, WI in 1971 and stayed there until 2000 at which time they moved back to Detroit Lakes, MN.

June was an entrepreneur; she owned and operated many restaurants in the Detroit Lakes area. She didn’t limit herself just to the restaurant business, but also opened an antique store. She loved making jewelry and especially liked vintage looking jewelry. June enjoyed cooking and was well known for her skill at making pies. She was a huge sports fan; proudly supporting the Vikings, the Bison, and the Twins. June’s family was very important to her; she loved carrying her children and then her grandchildren on her hip.

Deeply loved, June’s passing is mourned by her husband of 67 years Ronald Joy, her children; Terrie (Lester) Braasch, Sandra (Mark) Jenkins, Tom (Mary) Joy, Becky (Craig) Joy, Cindy (Jeff) Olive, and Tracey (Deb) Joy; her 14 grandchildren; her 24 great-grandchildren; her sisters Dolly Olson, Cora Crow, and Sharon Schermerhorn Rock, her brothers; Dale (Maggie) Schermerhorn, Harold (Jan) Schermerhorn; and many nieces and nephews.

June is preceded in death by her parents Julius and Hannah; infant daughter, Mary Ellen; grandchildren, Aaron and Jake; great-grandchild Jordan; her sisters Blanche, Delores, Janice, and Elaine and her brother Merle.
