Karen Hanson

Karen A. (Bekkerus) Hanson, 86, Detroit Lakes, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Detroit Lakes.

She was born in Barnesville, MN on December 27, 1936, a daughter of the late Hilbert and Dorothy Bekkerus.  Karen attended Barnesville schools graduating in 1952. She moved to Detroit Lakes in 1968, and held various positions over the years.  She worked for many years at Swift’s, and later in home health care.  Karen loved taking care of people!  She was an excellent cook, and a gifted seamstress.  She was active for many years at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, and would gather with other ladies on Wednesday evenings to make quilts at church. In her retirement, Karen also volunteered for years at local nursing homes.  She was an avid gardener and loved keeping her yard looking beautiful. Karen was a friend to all and will be sadly missed.

Karen is survived by her children: Paul Hanson of Audubon, MN, and Pam VanDyke of Detroit Lakes.  She also leaves her grandchildren: Bryant (Lee-ann) Pettis, Paul (Shannon) Hanson, Randy (Lindsey) Hanson, and Dylan (Melissa) Hanson; her great-grandchildren: Marie, Adia, Riverlyn, Emmerie, Alivia, Wilder and Wren, as well as a brother, Julian (Joyce) Bekkerus.  She is further survived by other relatives and friends.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters, Linda and Mary.

The memorial visitation for Karen will be held on Monday, November 27, 2023, from 5 to 7 PM at ST. PETER’S LUTHERAN CHURCH (19747 Co Hwy 6, Audubon, MN 56511).  Visitation continues Tuesday, November 28, 2023 from 11 to 12 Noon, in church.  A funeral service will follow at 12 Noon with Pastor Matthew Engum officiating.  Final rest will be in Barnesville Cemetery.
