Kari Winters

February 28, 1951 — May 19, 2009

Kari Lee Winters was born February 28, 1951 in Detroit Lakes , MN to Henry and Leona (Tweten) Winters. She is a graduate of St. Luke’s Hospital School Of Nursing in Fargo , ND and earned her Masters Degree from the University Of Southern California . She worked as a psychiatric nurse at the UCLA Medical Center for over 20 years, moving to Albuquerque , NM in 2006. Her passion was animal rescue in the Los Angeles and Albuquerque areas and she served on the board of Southern California Siamese Rescue. She also worked with several other pet rescue organizations.





Kari was also an award-winning writer and a professional member of the Cat Writers’ Association. She wrote books and articles for many pet publications such as Cat Fancy, The Pet Press and others. She also served as the administrator of the website www.shelterpetsinc.com . Her motto – “Changing animals’ lives through writing.”





While working to make a better life for pets, she was active on all levels from helping reestablish outreach programs in the schools to helping find auction items and contributions for the Mayor’s Dog Ball to advocating on behalf of Animal Welfare to the city council. She was an active foster parent for animals in need.





Kari is survived by her mother: Leona Winters of Detroit Lakes, MN; her Goddaughter: Krystal and her husband Joe Javien of CA; special friends, Gary Rhode and Wuffy of CA, Jenn Sandstrom, Joann Valentine, Vicki Sandstrom, Lexi Kelly all of New Mexico and Darlene Arden of MA.





Memorials are preferred to the Becker County Humane Society.
