Kathleen Mortenson

Kathleen Joy Mortenson, “Kathy” (Manning), 62 of Detroit Lakes, MN passed away on April 20th, 2019 in Fargo, ND.

Visitation will be held at David Donehower Funeral Home on Thursday April 25, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral Service will be held at Strawberry Lake Mennonite Church on Friday April 26, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Delmar Yoder officiating. Burial to follow at Strawberry Lake Mennonite Cemetery. Lunch will be served following the committal service.

Kathy was born in Detroit Lakes, MN to Jack and Marie Manning on September 21, 1956. She grew up near Strawberry Lake and attended the Strawberry Lake Mennonite Church.  She attended grade school in Strawberry Lake, MN and later earned her GED in Detroit Lakes, MN. On July 8, 1977 Kathy was united in marriage to Roy Mortenson in Sisseton, SD. The couple moved to Ulen, MN where they lived for 12 years and finally settled on a small farm near Hitterdal, MN.

Kathy previously worked for Swift & Co. in Detroit Lakes, MN. She then enjoyed being a stay at home mom to their five children. Later, she began working as a cook at the Hitterdal, Ulen and Twin Valley local Cafe’s part time. Following graduation of her last child she most recently had worked as a housekeeper for the Essentia Health hospital in Detroit Lakes.

Kathy enjoyed tending her flowers, watching birds and spending time on the farm enjoying the cows and chickens. Kathy’s biggest joy was raising and caring for her five children and spending time and visiting with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Roy Mortenson; children, Terri (Dave) Lawrence of Frazee, Jason (Tawnya) Manning of Plummer, MN, Tonya Mortenson (James Degroat) of Frazee, Andrew Mortenson of Hoople, ND, and John Mortenson of Hitterdal, MN;  grandchildren, Tyler, Cole, Emily, Tyler, Justine, Dylan, Austin, Tasha, Darcy, Jacob and Easton; brother Mel (Shirley) Manning; sisters Donna Thompson and Beverly Stoll; and many other nieces, nephews, family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents Jack and Marie Manning; sisters, Darlene Stoll and JoAnn Mortenson; a brother, John Manning; brothers in law Don Thompson and Ronnie Stoll; and a son-in-law Jason Pace.
