Kay Fulp

April 10, 1944 — September 12, 2016

Kay Ann Fulp, 72, Detroit Lakes, died September 12, 2016 at Sanford Health in Fargo from complications of cardiac disease and diabetes. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 16 at 6PM in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass. Kay Ann Schultz was born April 10, 1944 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Wally and Margaret (Hand) Schultz. She was raised and educated in Detroit Lakes graduating with the class of 1962. After high school Kay attended college at NDSU. On June 11, 1965, Kay was united in marriage to Donald Fulp at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. They made their home in Ellendale, ND where Kay accepted her first teaching position. After moving to Wahpeton, ND, Kay's teaching career would include Wahpeton, Wyndmere and NDSCS. Kay was awarded North Dakota Educator of the Year and served on the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education. She retired in 2003 from NDSCS. Kay held leadership positions in Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators. She instilled in her children a love and desire for education. Kay was an active member at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Girl Scouts of America, Camp Fire Girls, and Red Hats. Kay loved to travel. She enjoyed trips to Mississippi during her daughter Kari's medical residency and trips to the California National Parks with her cousins. She made many memorable vacations to Mexico, Hawaii, France, Greek Islands, Turkey, St. George, UT and Sedona, AZ.

During the summers and after retirement she enjoyed relaxing on the east shore of Big Cormorant Lake.

Kay loved music and dance. She took lessons in tap dance and while travelling took lessons in belly dancing and hula. She enjoyed storytelling and "adventures" with her grandchildren to IHOP and Perkins. A skilled bridge and mahjong player, Kay challenged her grandchildren, nieces and nephews in everything she played. Kay's sisters acquiesce to her being the "Theme Queen". She was an amazing seamstress and painter designing many creative Halloween costumes. Her graduation, wedding and birthday cakes were legendary, from times in Wyndmere, ND as prom coordinator to her many decorations that are still in the Holy Rosary Catholic Daughters closet, Kay had a creative flare that surpassed everyone. Kay will be remembered and missed by her daughter: Dr. Kari (Andy) Lawrence, her son: Dr. John Fulp (Carrie LaDue) along with six grandchildren: Adam, Noah, Evan, Katy, Joshua and Alexis. In addition she is survived by four sisters: Ruth Schultz (Charles) Gunderson, Karol Schultz (David) Bruggeman, Mary Schultz caretaker of Kay's beloved dog "Hunny" and Ginny Schultz (Bruce) Imholte. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband Don Fulp. A special Thank You to the Sanford dialysis team and all area medical providers. In lieu of donations, Kay's desire would be for you to invite friends and family to play a game and enjoy each other's company.
