Lanette Sweeney

Lanette "Lanny" Nelson Sweeney, 64, of Detroit Lakes died January 25th, 2016 at her residence surrounded by her family and under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, January 30 at 11AM in Holy Rosary Catholic, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held Friday, January 29 at David Donehower Funeral Home from 5pm-7pm with a rosary service at 6:30pm followed by a Prayer Service at 7PM. Visitation will also continue at the church one hour prior to Mass. Lanette Nelson known to everyone as "Lanny" was born in Meeker County in 1951, the only child to Milton and Gertrude Nelson. She grew up in Litchfield, Minnesota where she graduated high school in 1969. She went on to earn a certification in Licensed Practical Nursing from Abbot School of Nursing in 1972, a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from Minnesota State University of Moorhead, and a Master's degree in Divinity from St. John's University in 2002. She was pursuing a second Master's in Bioethics from the University of St. Mary's. In 1979 she was married to Naval veteran Timothy Sweeney in Litchfield, Minnesota. Together they raised three sons. Lanny was employed by St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes as a Registered Nurse for over thirty years. She also served as a Pastoral Associate at St. Joseph's Parish in Oslo, MN, and an Instructor in Licensed Practical Nursing at Northwest Technical College in Detroit Lakes. For the past ten years she worked as a Pastoral Minister at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospital. She was an active member at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the National Catholic Chaplin's Association, and The Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a lector and Minister of Holy Communion at Holy Rosary, and worked with the Resolve through Sharing Program at St. Mary's Hospital. Lanny was well known in the lakes community as an active participant and compassionate caregiver. Lanny is survived by her three sons: Timothy (Rhonda) Sweeney, Joshua Sweeney (Jamie Braseth), and Eric Sweeney (fiancé Rachel Ayers) along with six grandchildren: Chealsie, Kaylie, Ethan, Elizabeth, Emily and Jameson Sweeney and three great-grandchildren: Alora, Peyton, and Kyler. Proceeded in death by parents and husband Timothy Sweeney.
