LaVern R. Fairbanks, 78, Mahnomen, MN, died Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Mahnomen Health Center- Nursing Home, Mahnomen.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 29 at 2PM in St. Benedict's Catholic Church, White Earth. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 28 starting at 4PM in the White Earth Community Center and continuing until the time of services on Wednesday. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery, White Earth. LaVern Robert Fairbanks was born June 22, 1934 in White Earth, MN to Charlie and Verna (Fairbanks) Potter. He was raised in White Earth and later moved to Flandreau, SD where he graduated high school. After high school he enlisted with the U.S. Air Force. After proudly serving his country he returned home and was united in marriage to Violet Johnson at Augustana Lutheran Church near Detroit Lakes. They resided in Detroit Lakes where LaVern worked various jobs. After they divorced, LaVern moved to Olympia, WA and was employed with the Washington Highway Department. While in Washington he met and married Verna Lee. He retired in 1990 and moved to Minneapolis, MN to care for his mother. After she passed away, LaVern moved back to White Earth to be closer to family and friends.
LaVern was a great "story teller", he travelled throughout the United States and enjoyed ricing, attending pow-wows and playing the harmonica. LaVern is survived by his children: Terry Fairbanks of Spokane, WA, Cheryl DeVall of Detroit Lakes, Robert (Roxanne) Fairbanks of Detroit Lakes and Tamie Fairbanks of Akeley, MN along with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, one sister: Theresa Potter of Spokane, WA and two brothers: Duane Potter of Mille Lacs, MN and Frank (Robin) Potter of Minneapolis, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Margaret King, Charles Fairbanks, Thelma Springfield, Joe Potter and Everett and Francis Potter.
