LaVonne attended school in Mapleton, Iowa. She graduated from Mapleton High School in a class of 30 in 1948. While in high school, LaVonne was very active in music by performing in the marching band and choir. Upon finishing high school, she went to work at the local telephone office as an operator routing local and long distance calls. LaVonne married Norb Caulfield on May 26, 1951, in Mapleton, Iowa. From there, they moved to Sioux City, Iowa, as Norb was working there as a photographer. Norb and LaVonne have eight sons. Her oldest sons, Steve, Jeff, Bruce, Kevin and Kent were born in Sioux City. Norb and LaVonne and their family then moved to Little Falls, Minnesota, in 1959 to further Norb's photography career. While in Little Falls, their son Craig was born. In 1962 Norb and LaVonne purchased their own photography studio in Detroit Lakes and moved the family there. Their sons, Mark and Bob, were born in Detroit Lakes to round out the family of eight boys. With eight boys, LaVonne was kept very busy as a loving mother. LaVonne was active in supporting Norb's work and growing the Caulfield Studio business. In the early years, LaVonne did much of the book keeping as well as used her artistic ability of the oil coloring of black and white photographs. She was truly gifted. Over the years, she became one of Detroit Lakes' hockey program's most loyal fans. Between her sons and then her grandsons, hockey had become a way of life for LaVonne and Norb. LaVonne loved to travel – it began with early camping trips with her boys then progressed to travel visiting her sons around the country and around the globe, then numerous trips with her grandchildren. LaVonne loved to play cards. She played cards with her grandchildren and with two different bridge clubs. She also carried on her mother's love of service and began knitting baby caps for St. Mary's Hospital. Between the two of them over the years, they knit nearly 4000 caps! LaVonne also continued her love of music by singing in the Holy Rosary Choir – highlighted with a beautiful solo at the dedication of the new Holy Rosary church in Detroit Lakes in 1968.
