LeRoy V. Bergen, 93, Detroit Lakes, MN died Tuesday, December 4 at his home in Detroit Lakes. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Monday, December 10 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, Fr. Jerry Rogers, officiating. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Friends may call 4:00 - 8:00 PM Sunday at Holy Rosary Church. The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 4:30 PM with a parish vigil service at 7:00 PM, all at the church. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Monday.
LeRoy Vincent Bergen was born September 9, 1914 in Detroit Lakes to Joseph and Mary (Hudon) Bergen. He attended Holy Rosary School and then joined his parents in their truck farm business. In 1935, he and his brother, Lawrence founded Bergen Wholesale Florists, a business that the family still operates today. LeRoy was united in marriage with Martha Tembrock July 25, 1938 in Ogema, MN. They made their home in Detroit Lakes and since 1977 have spent their winters at Leisure World in Mesa, AZ. LeRoy served as President of Tri-State Floral Association, he was a member of Bedding Plants International, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Detroit Lakes Lions Club. He was also a member of the Elks and Eagles Clubs. He was a life long investor and board member of Snappy-Inc in Detroit Lakes. During WWII, he was a pilot for the Fargo Civil Air Patrol. Leroy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved his family, his church, greenhouses, gardening, reading and traveling.
He will be remembered and deeply missed by his wife of 69 years, Martha of Detroit Lakes; his children, Robert and his wife, Cookie of Detroit Lakes, Raymond "Butch" and his wife Akama of Woodstock, NY, Karen and her husband Robert Velline of Cold Spring, MN, JoAnne and her husband Donald Lane of St. Cloud, MN, Rick and his wife Sue of Maple Grove, MN, Mike of Salt Lake City, UT, Patty and her husband, Mitch Vogt of Detroit Lakes, James of Detroit Lakes, Mary and her husband, Marty Solmon of Detroit Lakes, Steve of Detroit Lakes, Joe and his wife Kelli of Cold Spring; 34 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; a brother, Orville and his wife Faye of Caldwell, ID; a sister, Genevieve Doll of Yakama, WA. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald; a daughter, Monica; a grandson, Gabriel Solmon; a great- grandson, Steven Selezan; brothers, Lawrence, James and Jerome; sisters, LaVonne, Eva and Dorothy.
