Lois Marie Anderson was born September 12, 1933 near Pillager, MN to Arthur and Ruth (Culbertson) Anderson. She was raised and educated in Daisy, ND, graduating from Daisy High School. After high school, Lois pursued her dream in becoming a teacher. She attended Jamestown College and finished at Valley City State. In 1953, Lois was united in marriage to Arlen Harstad. They resided in Sandborn, ND later moving to the Detroit Lakes area in 1973. For over 30 years, Lois taught school in the Ogema and Waubun School Districts retiring in 1994. Lois continued subbing for teachers throughout the lakes area for several years following her retirement. Lois graciously volunteered her time wherever the need was. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School, tending to her garden, sewing, visiting with her "coffee friends" and travelling, especially her trips to Israel. Lois lived a life centered on Christ. Always leading by example, Lois exemplified a life full of positive energy, a strong faith and love for family. Lois was known to her children as the "prayer warrior". Arlen passed away on December 5, 2009. On October 21, 2011 in Daisy, ND, Lois was united in marriage to David Smith, a long time friend and retired pastor. They resided in Grand Forks and enjoyed going on several trips together, spending time with each others families and making new friends.
