Loren E. Nelson, 81, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Saturday, October 16 at Essentia Health in Fargo. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, October 21 at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, Rev. Wade Dutton, officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with military rites provided by the Lake Region Honor Guard.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Loren Ellsworth Nelson was born June 30, 1929 in Mantorville, MN to Oscar and Harriet (Goodwin) Nelson. He was raised in Mantorville and Redwood Falls, MN and then moved to Minneapolis. He served with the U. S. Air Force. Following his discharge, he returned to Minneapolis. Loren was united in marriage to Jeanita Cruger October 5, 1956 in Minneapolis. He worked as the regional sales manager for Miller Brewing Co. and then as the regional sales manager for Allied Van Lines. They moved to Detroit Lakes and owned and operated Birchwood Cabins 1972 – 1980. He owned and operated Nelson T. V. 1981 – 1984 and Harry J’s in the Washington Square Mall 1984 – 2004. Loren served as Mayor of Detroit Lakes 1980 – 1988. He was a member of the Elks, Eagles, V. F. W and American Legion. Prior to moving to Detroit Lakes, he was a member of the Minneapolis Businessmen’s Club.
He enjoyed golf, bowling, playing poker on the internet, cooking, good food, good music, dry humor and hunting with his Black Lab, Cannon. He was a good father and husband.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jeanita of Detroit Lakes, a daughter: Susan (Tom) Kubot of Detroit Lakes and a brother: Dana Nelson of Lake City, MN. He was preceded in death by a son, Bill, his parents and brothers and sisters: Faye, Harley, Bus, Howard and Timer.
