Louise M Mendenhall, 85, Detroit Lakes, died Friday, January 29, 2016 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes. Funeral Services for Louise will be held Wednesday, February 3 at 11AM in the Congregational Church-United Church of Christ in Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Wednesday. Louise Maxine Halvorson was born July 11, 1930 in Laurel, IA to Alfred and Emma (Burke) Halvorson. She grew up in Laurel, IA, graduating from Laurel High School in 1948. On February 20, 1953, Louise was united in marriage to James Mendenhall in Marshalltown, IA. They made their home in St. Cloud until making their home in Detroit Lakes.
Louise loved life and lived it to its fullest, she especially loved the water and sun. When they were not enjoying the lakes county, they were vacationing in Mazatlan. She loved to cook, tend to her garden and bowl. She was also involved in a local bridge club. She attended and was active at the Detroit Lakes Congregational Church and considered them her second family. Louise and James loved to dance and were members of the local dance club. She was also active in the Damien's and enjoyed socializing with her Detroit Lakes friends. She always had a special place in her heart for children and was a leader in the Cub Scouts and Campfire Girls. She enjoyed getting together with her sisters; Ruth, Rose, and Millie. Her abundance of energy, warm smile and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by many. Louise was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed a life centered in Christ, her family and many friends. Louise is survived by her husband of 62 years, James Fredrick Mendenhall, one daughter: Barbara (John) Blatzheim, grandchildren: James Blatzheim, Jaime Evans, and John Blatzheim and great grandchildren Lydia, Claire, Titus, Tabitha, June, Jude and Isaac along with three sisters: Ruth Townsend, Rose Speas, and Millie Davids. She is preceded in death by her parents and one son, Michael Dean Mendenhall.
