Lucille Longtine

December 9, 1940 — June 6, 2017

Lucy was born on December 9, 1940, in Detroit Lakes MN, to Leonard and Lillian (Olson) Carlson. She spent her childhood on the family farm where she developed a love for horses and developed her future skills as a nurturer by looking after her younger brothers. As a teenager she struggled with scoliosis and spent most of an entire school year at home recovering from major surgery. When she recovered, she flourished in school, rode horses again, and met her husband Phil at a birthday party in Detroit lakes. She was united in marriage to Phil on June 30, 1962, in Detroit Lakes. Phil moved with her to St Paul where she pursued her dream of becoming a nurse. Upon graduation, she and Phil moved to Moorhead to be closer to their parents and pursue their careers. Lucy worked as a nurse at Dakota Hospital until she found her dream job as a nurse at Clay County Public Health. After a few years in Moorhead, Lucy and Phil welcomed two children into their lives. The family enjoyed summers at their lake cabin and many memorable family vacations together. Lucy was able to see her children grow and get married and enjoy watching her grandchildren. Lucy is remembered by her family as a woman with a heart of gold whose main motivation was to help the ones she loved achieve their goals and lifelong happiness. Her house has always been filled with pictures of her children, their artwork, and later with pictures of grandchildren and their arts and crafts. Both of Lucy's children were so inspired by the example of their mother that they pursued careers as care givers. Lucy was a public health nurse for Clay County in MN for 27 years. She loved her job and the people she would visit and they often expressed their profound appreciation to her when they could. She was dedicated to her career and passionate about providing care to those in need, especially to those people who were isolated due to location or lack of income. She felt it was important that all people have access to health care and was able to reach many people who may not have received assistance in her role as a public health nurse. Lucy is survived by her husband, Phil; her children: Joel (Michelle) Longtine of Duluth, MN, and Wendy (Todd) Walton of Ramsey, MN; grandchildren: Riley Walton and Sadie Walton; brothers: Bruce (Kathy) Carlson of Moorhead, MN; Curt Carlson of Hill City, MN; Dan Carlson of Minneapolis, MN; and Andy Carlson of Eagan, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Leonard and Lillian Carlson. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hospice of the Red River Valley.
