Lucille Wayman

Lucille Elizabeth “Lukey” Wayman, 87, of Detroit Lakes, MN died Tuesday, February 24 at Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, MN under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 PM Monday, March 2 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Lake Park with Father Bob LaPlante officiating. Interment will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Detroit Lakes in the spring of 2009. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church on Monday.

Lucille Elizabeth Gerlach was born on May 6, 1921 in Fargo, ND to Albert and Olga (Lundgren-Flore) Gerlach. After graduating from Sacred Heart Academy, she attended Business College in Fargo. Lucille was united in marriage with James Wayman on June 25, 1945. She worked as a legal secretary at a Fargo-Moorhead law office and was a beloved secretary at Shanley High School beginning in 1964.

Lukey was known for her warm personality and sparkling sense of humor. She loved her husband and family, focused on what was good in her life and refused to complain. Lukey had a way of stealing people’s hearts with her beautiful smile and her unusually upbeat attitude. She is known to her family as the “baby sister”, the “Queen of Fair”, the ultimate potato salad maker and the person we aspire to become.

Lucille is survived by her son, John “Barney” (Dee) Wayman of Lake Park, MN; grandchildren, Michael (Kari) Wayman of Waconia, MN, Shelley Mott of Fargo, Tracy (Tony) Smestad of Blaine, MN and Mandy (Jeremiah) Nitz of Havre, MT; her seven great-grandchildren, Connor, Noah, Sophia, Nora, Nolan, Maximus and Aiden; and her sisters Marion Skauge of Moorhead, MN and Rose Moe of Grand Forks, ND; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Wayman; sister, Florence “Mimi” Olson and brothers, George, Jim and Frank “Bill” Gerlach.
