Margaret M. Kubat, 88, Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes.
Margaret Mary Vanek was born July 9, 1927 in Lankin, ND to Anton and Albina (Shirek) Vanek. She was baptized at Bechyne Catholic Church near Whitman, ND. Growing up on the family farm in rural North Dakota, Marge received her education in Whitman and Michigan, ND. Many memories were made from helping with chores on the farm, roller skating at the rink in Stump Lake to Christmas plays at the local town hall. She met her future husband Harold at a local dance. It was love at first sight! Marge and Harold were united in marriage at Bechyne Catholic Church on October 16, 1946. They lived in Brocket, ND while Harold worked for Standard Oil Company until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1959. That summer, they opened the Dairy Lane Drive Inn, complete with car hops. Later that year they opened Discount Shoe Store and continued their business until they retired in 1979. Marge was very active in the community. She was a faithful parishioner at Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a member of the Christian Mothers. She was also a member of St. Mary's and VFW Auxiliaries.She enjoyed her neighborhood Homemakers Club. Marge was a talented seamstress. She sewed many prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses and wedding dresses, including both of her daughter's wedding gowns. She was always proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and enjoyed watching them play. Marge loved when her family was together, especially at Christmastime, which allowed her to share her love for baking. In 2013 Marge was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of traveling to meet her Dad's family in the Czech Republic. This was an amazing trip for Marge at age 85.
Marge will be remembered and missed by her children: Gary (Nancy) of Madison, WI, Kay Marie Schiller, Laurie (Sid) Olson, Timothy (Joan)Kubat and Thomas (Susan) Kubat all of Detroit Lakes. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren along with sister-in-law: Dorine Gerstner of Whitman, ND and first cousins in the Czech Republic: Ludmilla Piskacova and Sr. Michaela Smrekova and their families. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold (2007), son-in-law: Stephen Schiller. Grandson: Christopher Kubat. Step-grandson: Aaron Reddy. Sister in law: Margaret Kubat. Brothers in law: Eugene Kubat and Louis Gerstner.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Marge will be remembered and missed but we take comfort in knowing that both Marge and Harold are once again dancing the night away. As Marge would say……"I still like to dance!"
