Margaret Smith

January 28, 1918 — July 16, 2009

Margaret A. Fairbanks was born January 28, 1918 in White Earth, MN to Charles Sr. and Eliza (Johnson) Fairbanks. She was raised in White Earth where she attended school. Margaret was united in marriage to Allen Smith in September of 1938. They resided in White Earth, where Allen worked as an instructor of auto mechanics in Waubun High School and Margaret was a homemaker. She loved to play bingo, crotchet and do embroidery work. She also enjoyed listening to country music, playing whist with her husband and neighbors when they would get together.  Margaret was known for her baking especially her bread. Margaret and Allen had 12 children, which kept both of them busy. Margaret was proud of her large family and cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was a life long member and faithful parishioner to St. Benedict’s Catholic Church.




Margaret will be remembered and greatly missed by her children: Doris (Robert) DeVall of Ice Cracking Lake, Mary L. (Dennis) Zortman of Ogema, MN, Beverly (Daniel) Stevens of Ogema, MN, Gordon L. (Dinah) of Ogema, MN, Betsy Smith of Ogema, MN, Charlene (Joseph Sr.) Garbow of Richwood, MN, Doretta (Thomas) Hanks of White Earth, MN, Regina (Delmar Sr.) Basswood of Ponsford, MN, Alberta (Kenneth Sr.) Bevins of Ogema, MN and Mark (Paula) of White Earth, MN. She is also survived by her 41 grandchildren, 92 great-grandchildren, 15 great great grandchildren and three sisters: Norby Blake of St. Paul, MN, Caroline Brown of St. Paul, MN and Faith (Robert) Lee of Minneapolis, MN.


She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Allen, two sons: Allen E. Smith Jr. and Robert F. Smith. One granddaughter Corrine DeVall, Daughter-in-law; Judy Smith, great grandson: Christopher Keezer, four brothers: Charles, Gordon, Aloysious, and Bernard and one sister: Martha Fairbanks.
