Marian J. Anderson, 93, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Sunday, April 10, 2011 at Emmanuel Nursing Home A�A�A½ Cottages. Funeral Services for Marian will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 11:00 AM in United Methodist Church, Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at David Donehower Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with an Eastern Star service at 6:30 PM followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Interment will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes. Marian Jeanette Anderson was born February 10, 1918 in Mandan, ND to James and Jeanette (Tholen) McDowell. She grew up in Bismarck, ND and the Callaway, MN area, later graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1936. After school she worked in the accounting and bookkeeping departments for Standard Oil in Duluth, MN and Mankato, MN.
On April 8, 1942 Marian was united in marriage to Raymond J. Anderson in Detroit Lakes. Together they farmed RayMar Acres until retiring in 1986. Along with being a wonderful mother, Marian was an excellent farm hand. She operated the machinery and took care of daily chores, displaying and instilling a hard work ethic for her children and grandchildren. For several years, Marian did audits and survey work. She also worked for the National Farmers Organization office in Detroit Lakes and was an active participant in DFL party fundraising events. Marian was active at her church, teaching Sunday School for many years. She was a member of Eastern Star where she served several terms as Worthy Matron and had a hand in helping coordinate their annual bazaar. Marian was well known for her famous brownies, and if you were lucky enough to be on her list, you would receive some of her homemade treats! In addition to baking, she also enjoyed tending to her gardens, knitting quilts and hats for the Crisis Center in Detroit Lakes. Marian will be remembered and missed by her two sons: Donald Anderson of Detroit Lakes, MN, Douglas (Katie) Anderson of Brentwood, TN, four grandchildren: Kirsten (Brad) Chesney of Murfreesboro, TN, Amanda (Michael) Schmitt of Brentwood, TN, Daniel (Kristy) Anderson of Audubon, MN and Bethany (David) Ustanko of Fargo, ND She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Claire and Ella Chesney, Lucy and Caroline Schmitt, Carter and Camryn Anderson, and Katrina Ustanko, along with her sister-in-law: Irene McDowell of Seattle, WA, and niece: Marilyn (Dave) Kerssen of Moorhead, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray J., daughter-in-law, Joyce Anderson, brother Jim McDowell, and sister Charlotte Withers.
