Marjorie Svedberg

September 8, 1921 — January 6, 2012

Marjorie Elaine Johnson was born September 8, 1921 at her grandparents' (August Bloom) home in Chisago City MN--the sole child of Reuben and Mildred (Bloom) Johnson. Marge spent her youth in south Minneapolis where she attended Field Elementary School, West High School and Washburn High School (class of 1939.) She graduated from the Minnesota School of Business and accepted an office position at Capitol Flour Mills where she worked for eight years. Marge was persuaded by a colleague to attend a ballroom dance at the "The Friendship Club" where she met the love of her life. On June 21, 1947 Marge was united in marriage to Harvey Svedberg at St. John's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. In September 1952 they moved to Cannon Falls MN where Harvey was a teacher and guidance counselor. Marge devoted her time to creating a happy home and raising their five children. In 1968 she started working part time for Sears and later Montgomery Ward until Harvey retired in 1980. Together they spent their retirement years traveling throughout North America. In 1988 Marge arranged a trip to Sweden where she and Harvey met relatives, explored their Swedish heritage, and visited family landmarks. In July 1992 they moved to Detroit Lakes. Just five months later, on December 8, Harvey passed away. Despite the challenges of severe rheumatoid arthritis, Marge maintained a positive attitude and self-reliance. She was active in churches her entire life--singing in the choir and a female ensemble, serving in circle, and participating in charitable activities. A lifelong member of Eastern Star, Marge served as Worthy Matron and was honored for her service. She proudly attended her grandchildren's events and performances, and surrounded everyone with her love and zest for life. Marge enjoyed sewing, camping, crossword puzzles, a challenging "500" card game, counted cross stitch, the family pets, and was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. She devoted many hours to writing daily journals, compiling the family history and creating keepsake books for her children and grandchildren. Marge truly was a sweet, smart, selfless, stoic Swede! Marge will be forever cherished and deeply missed by her children Lauri Svedberg of Minneapolis MN; Pam Svedberg of Oakdale MN; Jane Ballard of Detroit Lakes MN; Kris Svedberg of Fridley MN; John (DeAnne) Svedberg of Waverly IA; her grandchildren Adam Forry of South St. Paul MN; Katie (Brandon) Tharp of Austin MN; Anne Ballard of Fargo ND; Alissa, Brian and Anika Svedberg of Waverly IA; and great granddaughter Emma Kate Tharp. She is preceded in death by her husband Harvey and her parents Reuben and Mildred. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
