Mark Steven Gunderson

Mark Steven Gunderson was born on November 18, 1947, to Mox (Magnus) and Julie (Juliette) Gunderson in Detroit Lakes, MN. The 3rd of 5 children, Mark enjoyed growing up on the lake and spending time with his brothers and neighborhood friends. 

A graduate of Detroit Lakes High School class of 1966, Mark participated in many extracurricular activities including football, basketball, debate, and theater. Mark went on to attend Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where he studied history. 

Mark met Luone Ost at dance at the Pavillion in Detroit Lakes and the two were married in 1969. They had two girls together, Stephanie and Lindsey.

Mark was a staple member of the community, selling cars in DL through Nereson’s and Norsemans’s dealerships, like his father before him. Mark loved interacting with his clients and always focused more on the relationship than the deal, which is what kept his clients coming back. In his free time, Mark enjoyed bowling, trivia, and golfing at Detroit Lake County Club where he served as a starter for the Pine to Palm golf tournament for many years. 

Mark had many connections in the Detroit Lakes area, and it would remain his home until his death on April 6, 2023. Mark never met a stranger and had an inherent way of making anyone he met become immediate family. Mark was an active member of First Lutheran Church, coming from a long line of church servitude. 

He is survived by his two loving daughters, Stephanie (John) Halverson of Salt Lake City, Utah, Lindsey (Michael Colwell) Gunderson of Norman, Oklahoma, his two grandsons, Alek (Alyssa) Halverson of San Antonio, Texas, and Connor (Amanda Kreidlkamp) Halverson of New York, New York, as well as his brother Michael (Gail) Gunderson of South Ponte Verda Beach, Florida, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Mark passed away at Essentia Hospital in Fargo with his daughters by his side. Proceeding him in death are his parents, brothers Dan, William (Bill), and David Gunderson, and wife Luone Gunderson. Services will be held at David-Donehower Funeral Home on Friday, 4/14 at 2pm. Celebration of life to follow at Bleachers Bar and Grill in Detroit Lakes.
