Marvin L. Collins, 73, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Friday, January 29, 2016 at Essentia-St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 5, 2016 at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, Rev. Tim Cook, officiating. Interment will be in Linnell Cemetery, rural Ponsford, MN with Military Rites provided by the Lake Region Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday. Marvin LeRoy Collins was born January 25, 1943 in Bagley, MN to William and Grace (Brugman) Collins Sr. He moved with his family to the Frazee/Detroit Lakes area as a child and is a 1960 graduate of Frazee High School. While in high school, he worked with his Dad harvesting wood and also worked part time pumping gas at Sanders Deep Rock in Frazee. He worked in his brother, Don's bakery in Frazee from 1959 until it burned in January, 1960. He then worked for Carlson's Bakery in Detroit Lakes. It was here that he met Marilyn Flury. He also worked for a bakery in Grand Forks, ND until December, 1960 and enlisted in the U. S. Navy in January, 1961. Marvin and Marilyn were united in marriage December 1962 in Detroit Lakes. They later divorced. Marvin served 19 1/2 years in the navy receiving an honorable discharge, July 31, 1980 in McAlester, OK as a Chief Petty Officer He was united in marriage to Carol Peterson in November 1987 in Duluth, MN. They later divorced. Marvin earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Minnesota – Duluth. Then he worked as a chemical dependency counselor in Warren, MN., Mankato, MN., Huron, SD., Mitchell, SD., and Rochester, MN., retiring in 2008 in Owatonna, MN. Marvin then moved to Detroit Lakes in 2013. Marvin enjoyed fishing and time with his grandchildren. Survivors include three sons and a daughter: Jeffrey J. (Linda) Collins of Newark, DE; Colleen K. Gunn of Omaha, NE, Stephen M. (Yvonne) Collins of Tulsa, OK, Jesse L. Collins of Mankato, MN; six grandchildren: Elizabeth & Michael Collins, Katelyn, Richard and Karen Gunn and Rebekah (Jimmy) Crain; two great-granddaughters: Joey and Jocelyn Crain, a brother: Gary (Carol) Collins of Detroit Lakes and a sister, Jeanette Collins in Montana, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Grace Collins, three brothers, Donald, William and Merlin "Doug" Collins, his grandparents, John & Jean (Tate) Brugman, William & Nellie Ann (Rummins) Collins.
