Mary Matter, 90, Detroit Lakes, formerly of Callaway, died peacefully Wednesday, May 25, 2022, due to natural causes, at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes.
Mary Matter was born June 13, 1931, in Austin, MN to Roger and Marcella (Turek) Dunn. She began her schooling in Red Wing, MN, moving with her family to Hampton, MN, Osceola, WI, Menomine, WI and Mahnomen, MN. Mary was united in marriage to Jerome Matter, October 4, 1949, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beaulieu, MN. They farmed northwest of Callaway until moving to a home on Buffalo Lake.
Mary and Jerome traveled extensively visiting Alaska, Canada, the western United States and Mexico. They wintered in Texas, where she was a member of the Red Hat Ladies, enjoyed dancing, and loved playing cards. She was a Sr. Gold Medalist in Pinochle. She was a member of the Callaway Christian Mothers. Mary was a 4-H leader for the Riceville Fireflies for many years. Jerome died November 14, 2020.
Mary enjoyed Bowling, playing cards, puzzles, scrapbooking and doing ceramics with her daughter,Sharon. Mary’s took pride in her collection of plates and nativity sets. She treasured her time in the kitchen and was known for her sauerkraut, turtle, apple pies and chicken dumpling soup.
