Mavis L. Nelson, 68, rural Waubun, MN, died Sunday, October 16 at her residence under Hospice of the Red River Valley. Memorial Services for Mavis will be held Tuesday, October 25 at 2PM in Community Alliance Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held Monday, October 24 at David Donehower Funeral Home from 5pm-7pm with a 7pm Prayer Service. Mavis Linda Aho was born September 21, 1948 to Matt and Milma (Haanpaa) Aho. She grew up on the family farm near Frazee, MN with two brothers and six sisters. While in school Mavis was a cheerleader at Frazee High School where she dated an all-conference football player and future love of her life, Jerry Nelson.They were united in marriage on August 27, 1966. Mavis was a homemaker, mother of two. When her children started school, she became the school lunch lady. Over the course of her working career she was faithfully employed at Dakota Clinic, retiring from Essentia Health.During her younger years, Mavis participated in square dancing and volleyball. Her creative side included sewing, painting, baking along with her latest hobby of gardening. Mavis enjoyed traveling with her husband Jerry and took numerous motorcycle trips including trips to Sturgis, SD. They enjoyed their vacations to Hawaii, Australia and Trinidad to name a few. Mavis had a soft spot in her heart for children and loved animals. She was especially fond of her six grandchildren, always finding time to read a story or attend activities they were participating in. Mavis was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be dearly missed. Mavis is survived by her loving husband, Jerry of rural Waubun, MN, two children: Lea Nelson of Ft. Worth, TX, and Jeff (Diane) Nelson of Finlayson, MN, six grandchildren: Brittney, Devon, Nathan, Brady, Tori and Emmalyn, one great-granddaughter: Brooklynn and faithful companion: "Buddy". In addition she is survived by five sisters, one brother and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, along with one brother and one sister.
