Mel loved the outdoors and fishing and hunting. He watched the Vikings and the Minnesota Twins and especially appreciated that the Twins played with such heart. Mel was a great dancer and he and his wife went to many old-time fiddle contests and polka festivals. For many years they organized an old-time fiddle contest in Detroit Lakes. In their retirement years, Mel and his wife traveled extensively in their motorhome.
