Melvin Wischnak age 84 passed away Friday March 6th at Oak Crossing Nursing Home.
Melvin Leonard Wischnak was born September 27, 1935 in Vergas, Minnesota the son of Otto and Bertha (Kading) Wischnak. He passed away March 6, 2020 in Detroit Lakes at Oak Crossing Nursing Home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Loon Lake, Vergas, MN and grew up and attended country school in rural Vergas. Melvin served his country in the U. S. Army receiving his honorable discharge in 1960.
On May 9, 1962 Melvin was united in marriage to Sharon Safar at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. To this union two children were born. They made their home in Detroit Lakes and Frazee. Melvin drove truck for Kost Brother’s Inc for 40 years retiring in 2001.
He loved being with his family and spending time with his grandchildren. Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors with his Black Lab Cody. He especially enjoyed spear fishing on Eagle and Trowbridge Lakes, and after retirement went on an elk hunt in Colorado. Melvin was also a former member of the Height of Land Sportsman club and the NRA.
Melvin is survived by his wife Sharon Wischnak of Frazee; children Sherry (Shon Bachleitner) Wischnak of Frazee; Ken (Cindy) Wischnak of Vergas; grandchildren: Ashley, Brody, and Joe. Sister: Leona Youngman of Coon Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Otto and Bertha Wischnak; siblings: Rudy Wischnak, Hank Moltzan, Bill Moltzan, Martin Moltzan, Alfred Moltzan.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 11, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at David-Donehower Funeral Home. Memorial services will be Thursday, March 12, at 11:00 am at the David-Donehower Funeral Home followed by Military Honors.
Spring burial will be at the Vergas Village Cemetery.
