Merlin David Zortman was born May 13, 1945 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Willard and Mae (Antonsen) Zortman. He attended school in Waubun, MN. After school he worked construction for a few years before pursuing a life long career as a truck driver. On October 18, 1965 Merlin was united in marriage to Julie LaDue. For 25 years, Merlin drove semi for Aggregate Industries. After retirement, Merlin enjoyed yard work and tending to his gardens. He made many trips to Mahnomen on a weekly basis to care for his sister-in-law, bringing a hot lunch, running errands and helping where he could. Merlin also enjoyed cooking where banana bread was one of his specialties. He also enjoyed cutting wood with his son. Merlin enjoyed a very special relationship with each of his grandchildren. He was very proud of them and always let them know it. Merlin enjoyed this Thanksgiving surrounded by his family. They had a day to remember, filled with wonderful food and fellowship that will be a lasting memory for his family. Merlin's sweet nature, funny "one liners" and calm demeanor will be memories cherished for a lifetime. Merlin is survived by his wife Julie of White Earth, two children: Scott (Jackie) Zortman of Mahnomen, Lisa Zortman (Gerald) of Tucson, AZ, three grandchildren: Nathan (Amanda) Zortman of Mahnomen, Holli Zortman (Dylan Farley) of Fargo and Iyonna Zortman of Tucson, AZ. He is also survived by two brothers: Gary (Carol) Zortman of Whiting, IA, and Dennis (Mary) Zortman of Ogema. He is preceded in death by his parents.
