Meta Thomsen

October 20, 1919 — December 19, 2020

Detroit Lakes

Meta Thomsen, 101, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on the evening of December 19, 2020 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Meta Emma Oelfke was born on October 20, 1919 to William and Emma (Blauert) Oelfke on the farm in Height of Land, MN. She finished eighth grade in 1934, then started working for neighbors.

Meta met her future husband, Roy Thomsen, at a party in Frazee, MN.  Later, while Roy was stationed in El Paso, TX, he asked her to take the train to join him. They were married the day she arrived, February 18, 1944.  After the war, they settled in Robbinsdale, MN.  The couple raised five children Karen, Marlene, Alan, Kris, and Mark.  Roy passed away in 1994.

In 2004, Meta moved to Detroit Lakes, MN enjoying family gatherings and outings. She was very welcoming and friendly to all she met, down to earth and positive. She had a great sense of humor, a sparkle in her personality, and was very energetic (even taking walks right up to her last morning).  She had always loved to make pies, (especially lemon), she loved the Lord, and she lived thankful and grateful. The family was excited to celebrate her 100th birthday and her life in 2019.

She is survived by her children Karen (and the late Jim) Holte, of Mankato, MN, Marlene (Nick) Field of Tewksbury, England, Alan (Dorothy) Thomsen of Frazee, MN, and Mark (Paula) Thomsen of Valley City, ND; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, her sisters Clara Aronson of Apple Valley, MN, and Louise Rew of Pine Island, MN, and brother Cecil Oelfke of Frazee, MN.

Meta was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy, and daughter Kris.

No services are planned at this time. She will be laid to rest with her husband Roy and daughter Kris, at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN in the spring/summer of 2021.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ecumen Lamplighter Manor and Emmanuel Nursing Home for their wonderful care and love of Meta. You are so much more than just “Essential”.
