Miriam Grace Moen, age 78, of Rochert, MN, died Friday, June 14, 2024, at Sanford Hospice House in Fargo, ND.
Miriam was born to parents Joel and Vivian Broberg on October 25, 1945, in Wheaton, MN. She attended elementary school in Dilworth, MN and Junior/Senior high school in Fargo, ND, graduating in 1963. She attended Macalester College her freshman year then transferred to North Dakota State University completing her BS degree majoring in English with a minor in German.
When Miriam was a young girl, she “helped” her dad build the cabin at Cotton Lake, which was to become the family’s summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day) lake home. During the summers she enjoyed sailing competitions with her blue bird sailboat.
Miriam’s first teaching job was in Cooperstown, ND. After a couple years she decided she wanted to see the world, joining the Peace Corps and was assigned to Bangkok, Thailand teaching English as a second language. Two years later returning to the states she was hired at WTCN TV in the Twin Cities working in the sports dept. Miriam then returned to education in Gibbon, MN teaching English and German. During the summers she traveled to Germany to complete her master’s degree in German. It was in Gibbon that she met David and they were married on June 21, 1975. Their sons, Thomas (Dec 1, 1978) and Joshua (Nov 1, 1980) were born. The family moved to Fargo, ND; Litchfield, MN and finally to Cotton Lake.
Miriam enjoyed knitting making receiving blankets for babies of family and friends. She was an avid reader which made for an excellent Scrabble player. She volunteered many hours at the Tamarac Wildlife refuge visitor center. She was a 50-year member of the PEO. She spent many hours in the garden because the family needed lots of frozen vegetables to eat or share. Miriam was a collector of dishes and was always ready to host a dinner party, sometimes up to 24 people. She was a frequent visitor to antique shops and garage sales. The boys were in many sports which included football, hockey and baseball so she spent many hours watching sports from their early years to graduation.
Miriam will be greatly missed by her husband of 48 years, David; children, Thomas (Katy) Moen, Maple Grove, MN; Joshua (Sarah) Moen, Dassel, MN; and her cousin/brother Michael (Patricia) West, Rochert, MN; brother-in-law, John Boots, Big Sugarbush Lake, MN.
