Nora Olson

November 19, 1939 — August 8, 2008

Nora Lea Olson, 68, of Detroit Lakes, MN and formerly of Gueydan, Louisiana passed away at St. Mary’s Innovis Hospital in Detroit Lakes on Friday, August 8, 2008.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 16, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes with Father Jerry Rogers officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes. Luncheon and fellowship following the interment will be held at the Grace Lutheran Church, 213 Roosevelt Avenue, Detroit Lakes, MN.


A wake will be held 6:30 PM Friday, August 15, with a VFW Service at 7:00 PM, at the David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Saturday.





Nora Lea Olson was born November 19, 1939 in Biloxi, Mississippi to Eddie and RosaBelle (LeMaire) Premeaux. She was raised in Gueydan, Louisiana and also in Biloxi, Mississippi. Nora Lea married Norman E. Olson from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota in Biloxi Mississippi on March 29, 1958 where he was stationed at that time with the United States Air Force.





Shortly after their marriage they were stationed overseas in Taipai, Taiwan where they spent two years. From Taiwan, they were then stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, back to the United States for a very short period of time before being stationed overseas again where they lived and raised a family in Taipai (again) and also in Karamusel, Turkey and Crete, Greece. While Norman spent his tour in Vietnam, Nora Lea lived in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota with her children.





Nora Lea was extremely active in military life while busy raising their family. Nora Lea even performed in NCO Clubs as Phyllis Diller raising money for various charities. She was very active in her children’s lives as a Girl Scout Leader, PTA Leader and many other various activities. Nora Lea was also an active member with the VFW Auxiliary


and also a Domestic Violence Victim Advocate. She was also a member of the Gueydan Garden Club, enjoyed bowling, swimming, camping and spending time with her family.





Nora Lea worked for a military newspaper in their young married life prior to becoming the WSI (Water Safety Instructor) for the entire military base in Crete. After Norman retired from the military they settled in Detroit Lakes to finish raising their family. Nora Lea worked at the Swift Hatchery at that time. In March of 1979 her husband passed away. Shortly afterwards, Nora Lea decided to go back to college at the tender age of 42. She completed her degree from Moorhead State University but not until she relocated to San Antonio, Texas. From Texas she moved to North Carolina for a few years and resettled in Gueydan, Louisiana with her family. In 2005, her daughter Janet and son-in-law Rob moved Nora Lea back to Detroit Lakes to live out the rest of her life with her children and grand children.





Nora Lea is survived by her mother RosaBelle LeMaire, Gueydan, LA; sister, MaryAnn (L.C.) Smith, Gueydan, LA; brother Donald (Gayle) Premeaux, Paducah, KY; daughter, Alene Kenny (Kelly Anderson), Pelican Rapids; son, Norman E. Olson, Jr. of Detroit Lakes; daughter Janet (Robert) Kiihn of Detroit Lakes; grandchildren: Heather Ann Stagner, Pelican Rapids; Candace Rudolph, Alexandria, VA; Katie Schiller, Detroit Lakes; Paul Schiller, Detroit Lakes; Cassandra Olson, Northbranch, MN; Joey Anderson, Glyndon, MN; Jamie Anderson, Minnetonka, MN; great-grandchildren: Rianna Stevenson, Louisville, KY; Emily Huddleston, Jasper, IN; Jasmin Olson, Northbranch, MN; Bayley Rose Anderson, Glyndon, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman (Ole) Olson; father, Eddie Premeaux; and a grandson, Thomas (T.J.) Michael Kenny, III.
