Odelia Tietz

Odelia Katherine (Heinen) Tietz was born in 1927 in Spring Creek township of Becker County to parents Peter and Pauline (Woeste) Heinen. She grew up during the depression era in a German Catholic community of Ogema MN. Odelia’s early life included close-knit neighbors, good country living, and outdoor sports or activities. She attended district #114 country school, followed by Waubun Senior High School, graduating in 1945. Odelia went on to complete three years of college at Moorhead State University, graduating with a teaching degree. She taught country school in rural districts #46 and #20.

Odelia married Duane Tietz in 1950 and became a professional wife and mother to six wonderful children. In the mid 1970s, Odelia became active in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement that emphasized having a personal relationship with Jesus and expressing the gifts of the Holy Spirit. She was active in her church, teaching religious education classes in four different parishes. She was asked to be a Grief Support Leader by Holy Rosary Catholic Church and became the co-founder of its current Emmaus Ministry. Odelia also served as Eucharistic Minister and Lector at Holy Rosary as well as visiting the home bound and volunteering for 15 years at Emmanuel Nursing Home.

Odelia is preceded in death by her husband, Duane Tietz; daughters Bonnie Galbrecht and Mary Paulson; son-in-law Gerald Galbrecht; grandson Brian Galbrecht; parents Peter and Pauline Heinen; sisters Doris Eidenschink and Rita Mackner; and four Heinen brothers: Irvin, Martin, Leo Victor and Leo Henry.

Odelia is survived by children: Don (Coleen) Tietz, (Earl Paulson), Rick Tietz (Jean), Terry (Darrell) Beck, and Scott (Amy) Tietz. Grandchildren: Amy (Jason) Coley, Guy (Anna) Tietz, Erin (Steve) Kline, Senior Chief Jason (Candice) Paulson, Michel (Hope) Tietz, Jeremy (Kate) Beck, Nic (Nikki) Beck, Heather (Nick) Ott, Josh Tietz (Ashley), and Adam Tietz. Great grandchildren: Emma and Averi Coley, Sully Kline, Kolby Paulson, Sawyer, Brayden and Calvin Beck, Kelsi and Kile Beck, Tanner Ott, and Hunter Tietz. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation from 5-7pm Thursday, September 12th at David Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes MN, with prayer service at 7pm and rosary following. Funeral at 1pm Friday, September 13th at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes MN, followed by lunch and then burial at Lake Park Cemetery.
