Paul B. Sukke, 61, Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, January 19 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 23 at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes with Reverends Wade Dutton and David Peterson, officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes with Military Rites provided by John Bridges American Legion Post 15.
Friends may call 4 to 8 PM Tuesday, January 22 with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Paul Bernard Sukke was born June 6, 1946 in Benson, MN to Wayne and Angeline (Sulier) Sukke. He was a 1964 graduate of Benson High School where he was active in music and sports. In 1968 Paul graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN with a B. A. in economics. He was united in marriage with Madalyn Conger in 1967 in Moorhead, MN. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1968 and served as a Naval Aviator, flying P-3 Orions in the Far East during the Viet Nam War.
In 1974, they moved to Alexandria, MN, where Paul was an insurance agent for First Bank Systems. In 1977, they moved to Willmar, MN to establish an insurance agency with First Bank Willmar. Paul was active with the Willmar Jaycees (earning the Distinguished Service Award). He was also active with the Willmar Chamber of Commerce and Vinje Lutheran Church. In 1988the family moved to Detroit Lakes where Paul became manager of First National Insurance Agency. He purchased the agency in 1995 and changed the name to Sukke Insurance. The agency was sold in 2006 and Paul remained as Manager until his retirement on December 31, 2007.
Paul was dedicated to his family and community service. He was active in the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce serving as Chairman of the Board in 1995 and 1996. He served as Chairman of the Governors Fishing Opener in 2003 and was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Chairmans Award. He also served as Chairman of the fund raising committee for the building of the new Chamber of Commerce Building in 2006. Paul joined the Board of the West Central Initiative Fund and had served as Board Chairman. An active member of First Lutheran Church, Paul served as President of the congregation from 1989 to 1990, and Chairman of the Call Committee. He was a member of the Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary Club and was named the Rotarian of The Year in 1989 for his efforts in organizing the Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary Club. He was also a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Paul enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, We Fest, being at the lake and new dining experiences.
Paul is survived by his wife, Madalyn of Detroit Lakes; son, Erik of Cincinnati, OH; daughter, Allison, and her husband, Patrick Daly of West Fargo, ND; his mother, Angeline Sukke of Benson, MN; brother, Robert and his wife, Laurie of Coon Rapids, MN; sister, Linda and her husband, Curt Pargman of Benson, MN; his father and mother- in-law, Ray and Dorothy Conger of Detroit Lakes.
