Peter S. Hilleboe, 87, Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Fargo, ND and Scottsdale, AZ, died Tuesday, November 18 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 22 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel in Detroit Lakes, Chaplain Vicki Marthaler, officiating. Friends may call at the nursing home one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Peter Stuart Hilleboe was born September 24, 1921 in Minneapolis, MN to Christian and Mabel (Johnson) Hilleboe. He graduated from NDAC (now NDSU) in 1943. He then served with the U. S. Navy 1943 – 1946. Following his discharge, he attended the University Of North Dakota in Grand Forks where he earned a Masters Degree in Economics. Peter was united in marriage to Sally Fleck in 1946. They made their home in Fargo where he was a building contractor. Several sections of Fargo housing carry the Hilleboe name. Peter was elected to the Fargo City Commission where he was one of the youngest people to serve as a commissioner. He then served 12 years in the North Dakota House Of Representatives. While in the legislature, he was the first person in the country to introduce a bill calling for term limits. He was often heard to say “If you can’t accomplish what you were going to do in twelve years, you are working for yourself and not for the people whom elected you”.
Peter was united in marriage to Margaret “Peggy” Brennan in 1985. He served as a broker for Piper Jaffrey in Fargo and was a financial consultant for Gate City Savings and Loan in Fargo. In the 1960’s he also owned and operated the Lamplite Lounge in south Moorhead, MN. Survivors include his wife, Peggy of Fargo; children, Laura (Greg) Eisinger, Stuart (Carla) Hilleboe, Kristina Hilleboe and Amy Hilleboe; and six grandchildren.
