Philip was born May 29, 1917, in Ferryville, Wisconsin, to Peter and Nettie (Gustason) Birkelo. He grew up on the family farm near Ferryville. He was a farmer for 30 years. After farming, he began hauling cars for Clark Auto Transport Co. and drove over the road for 30 years. Philip retired in 1978.
Phil married Hope Deaver, December 25, 1943. They were later divorced. On May 22, 1974, he married Lucille Berkner. Lucille passed away in April of 1996. On October 11, 1997, Phil married Arlene Brickley. Phil and Arlene lived in Detroit Lakes until August of 2002. They relocated to Cresco, Iowa where they were living at the time of his death.
Phil was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a trustee and district president for the Eagles Club.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Rusty, Brother-In-Law George Ashley, and his wife Lucy.
Philip is survived by his Wife Arlene, Stepchildren: Brian Berkner (Janice), Rosalind Landers(Roger), Wyonne Bucheit (George) and Tammy Fcalzo. Eight Grandchildren, eleven Great Grandchildren, five Great-Great Grandchildren, and numerous Step- Grandchildren and Step- Great Grandchildren. One Brother, Gerhard (Geniveve) Birkelo of Viroqua, Wis. and One Sister, Jean Ashley of Soldiers Grove, Wis.,and several nieces and nephews.
