Raymond Frank Sandberg, known to many as "Smokey", was born June 1, 1936 in Moorhead, MN to Frank W. and Rose K. (Stultz) Sandberg. He was raised and educated in Vergas, MN. He proudly served his country from 1953-1956 during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Hawaii and Japan. On February 6, 1960, he was united in marriage to Sharon I. LaDoux and they made their home in Detroit Lakes. During Smokey's working career he worked as a land leveler in Montana and later John T. Jones Construction of Fargo. While living in Detroit Lakes, he worked for Detroit Lakes Ice Works. He was employed as a mechanic for Swanson's Repair for several years, and he also drove semi for Gabor Trucking. He finished his career working for Lakeview Township with the maintenance crew. Smokey was a "Jack of All Trades", he was always tinkering on something. He was an avid sportsman and a gunsmith. He loved to go hunting and especially enjoyed the ice fishing trips to Canada. He also enjoyed riding his Harley Sportster, bird watching, smoking tulaby and was known for making the best baked beans. He was a member of the Jess-Omundson VFW Post 1676 in Detroit Lakes. Smokey will be remembered and missed by his wife Sharon of Detroit Lakes and his seven children: Deborah (Stacy) Kraemer, Raymond Sandberg Jr., LeRona Sandberg, Dean Sandberg and Wendy Olds all of Detroit Lakes, Thomas (Julie) Sandberg of Audubon and Summer Pace of Frazee. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one sister: June Wood of Detroit Lakes along with several nieces and nephews.
